Originally published by Graphix in 2008 The Stonekeeper, first volume in the graphic novel series titled Amulet introduced readers to Emily Hayes, who moves to an old family home with her mother Karen and brother Naven after her father had died in a tragic car accident. There she discovers an amulet in the library of her great grandfather, and a passage to another world in the basement, where a voice from the amulet grants Emily magical powers. Through a series of events involving the kidnapping and rescue of Karen which leaves her comatose, Emily sets course to explore this new world for a cure aided by her new abilities and several friends.
The journey of Emily is almost at an end… almost.
As with Avatar the Last Airbender, the world is rich with details and there are some great character arcs that unfold throughout the adventure, so a series that may be targeted at a younger audience has grown over time and is fully accessible to an older audience.
Filled with beautiful artwork by the talented illustrator, and writer of the series Kazu Kibuishi, each of the now eight books expands on the story substantially and the journey of Emily is almost at an end… almost. As mentioned, the first book came out in 2008, with the subsequent second through fifth each coming out a year apart, and then another two years between the latest three books. The eighth volume was released in September of 2018 and the wait for the ninth and final book has been a lengthy one, but one I am more than willing to make.
